Zooming Into The New Year

28 January 2021

After enjoying a much-needed three-week long winter break, Brentwood resumed classes on January 12th over Zoom. The four days of classes were mainly used to get the students back in the swing of things and prepare us for the next five months of school.

The first day of classes was a bit of a challenge for some students because it was our first time waking up early in quite some time. For others, it was their first time using Zoom so it took a bit of time for the new students to adjust to the online environment. Day one classes were a success as all students and teachers found their way into the correct Zoom rooms for the three academic classes along with an intense Active Living session in the afternoon led by the Brentwood staff.

The second day of classes went much more smoothly as everyone was now familiar with the Zoom technology and readjusted to the earlier wake up time. The day included students’ and teachers’ other three academic classes in the morning which was followed by fine arts in the afternoon.

The third day of classes went by perfectly as everyone now fully knew what was expected of them during the week of online classes. Thursday included the final three ABC classes of the week and the grand finale of Active Living. The Active Living, without a doubt, helped the students get back into good physical condition for when regular sports resume. Thanks to Mr Wismer, Ms Hall & Mr Barrett for their humour and energy.

The final day of online school was a relief to some but also a wake up call as students now realized that they would be returning to campus in the next few days. Friday consisted of the final DEF classes in the morning along with the final online arts classes in the afternoon.

Student Joshua A, Ellis ‘22 said that his experience over Zoom was “Awesome because of the later wake up time, along with much less difficult work being assigned.” Youki I, Whittall ‘23 said that “The experience I had over Zoom was great and I encountered no issues with the software but it was a little hard to stay focused.” Everyone throughout the Brentwood community is thankful that the Zoom experience was a success but at the same time we are hopeful that in-class learning can continue for the rest of the school year.
