The first ever Writing 12 Contest was held by Luka W and Mr Collis this month, with Mr Collis’ wife, Ms Handford, in charge of reviewing the submissions and choosing the winners for the two categories: prose and verse.  The contest was open to all students, and aspiring writers in Grade 11 who intend on attending Mr Collis’ Writing 12 class next year were especially motivated to submit their best works, for this is part of the audition process for the Writing 12 class, into which only 10 outstanding writers are selected every year.  The creative writing course taught by Mr Collis can be taken as either an academic or art class, and these ten outstanding writers are provided with prompts to work on. At the end of each year, they are expected to create a personal project. The Writing 12 class also holds occasional slam poetry parties in the eveings led by Ava N, Allard ‘18. After reading over 40 submissions, Ms Handford carefully picked the two winners — Jaylyn B, Allard ‘19 for Prose and Phoebe H, Hope ‘19 for Verse. These two talented writers were rewarded with prizes valued at $50 and feted on the Bunch stage in Assembly.  “I’m really happy that my poem was picked out of all the incredibly talented pieces that were submitted” said Phoebe. “I submitted three poems and laughed out loud when Mr Collis told me my goofy one was the winner. I really enjoy writing but I haven’t been pushed to write as well as I can until this year and Mr Collis has really helped with that.” When I asked what advice Jaylynn would give to other writers, she said, “Writing isn’t so much about being grammatically perfect as it is about being enjoyable. Anytime you can entertain someone, that’s a success.”  This first ever Writing 12 Contest was received with great enthusiasm, and many creative writers were excited to participate and showcase their talent. This contest is tremendously valuable for aspiring writers at Brentwood, and I can’t wait for this contest to be hosted again next year by future Writing 12 students. Grace L, Allard ‘19
