Wrapping Up a Great Season

4 December 2021

There’s no better way to celebrate a sport season full of great accomplishment and growth than a pizza party and ice cream social - so the Brentwood Volleyball teams did just that. Last Monday all teams in Brentwood Volleyball gathered in the Foote Field House, teary-eyed, to conclude a wonderful season full of volleyball.

This season was unique given the return of competitive matches such as league games and the bodacious Brentwood Classic following a long year of strict COVID restrictions that prevented such play. We were delighted to be back on the court to face fierce competition and to create lifetime bonds and lasting memories.

Brentwood Volleyball added a record number of interested players with a wide variety of experience and skill levels. Luckily, with a great coaching staff and amazing facilities, every girl was able to find her own spot on a team where she could make an impact. There were seven different teams ranging from Junior Developmental all the way to the Senior A. Kiara J, Alex ‘23, on the Senior B  squad, reflected on their season: “It was a fun team to be on and awesome to be competitive again. Getting to participate in tournaments and having a team with people of similar skills was a great opportunity. We all got coached by a former university player, learning lots while still having fun.”

With stomachs full after some well-deserved ice cream and pizza, this feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction was shared widely among players and coaching staff. After the meal concluded, Ms Fougner, Head of Volleyball made a few remarks: “This year we had our largest number ever to register in volleyball with over 100 girls. These girls were placed on one of seven teams (4 junior and 3 senior) depending on their skill level. We were so happy that the teams were able to finally compete in league games and to host and travel to tournaments. We were also so fortunate to have four Brentwood volleyball alumni join us on the coaching staff.”

Mostly gathered in teams, the closing dinner was a great way to have one last bonding experience before the official conclusion of Term 1 sport. For many players, this was just a “see ya later” to the sport as they plan on gearing up for first term volleyball again next year, but for other, especially Grade 12s, there was a hint of melancholy in the air as they said goodbye to a sport that truly made their Brentwood experience special.

Although term 1 sport is officially over, Senior A Volleyball is still hard at work practicing and hoping to dig their way to a medal at provincials December 9-11.

Many thanks to all of the incredible staff and coaches that made such a successful volleyball season possible this year!
