Winter Term Sports Review

3 April 2020
Blake Gage - Director of Athletics

While third term competitive sports are currently on hold, we had quite the finish to winter term. Our hockey teams played extremely well in our annual Ross Cup tournament with the highlight being our first team making it to the semi-final where they played a great game but lost to the eventual champion Prince of Wales. Nonetheless, from our beginners to our Shawood girls, to our competitive first team, it was truly a terrific season for all 54 participants in this program.  In basketball, our Senior Girls showed just how much they improved by playing outstanding basketball at the North Island Championship and qualifying for Islands, a feat we have not accomplished for a number of years. Meanwhile, our Junior Girls made their much anticipated appearance at our first ever provincial championship where they lost their first game in a hard fought affair but proceeded to bounce back and win their next three games to win the Rivalry Bracket; it was definitely an impressive first showing for the girls.  On the boys side, our Grade 9 Boys won a couple of thrilling games at their Island Championship and came away with a well-deserved bronze medal for their efforts; it was a terrific result considering they were competing against much larger 3A and 4A schools. Our Junior A team, after a very strong season that included a number of tournament victories, fell short of their goal to qualify for provincials but still finished an impressive 5th place at a very competitive Island Championship.  Finally, our Senior Boys Basketball team, bolstered by the pick up of a couple juniors, shocked everyone when they came back from a 15 point deficit to win their 4th consecutive Island Championship in front of an excited crowd in our Foote Athletic Center. They kept their positive momentum going at provincials where they played themselves into the semi-final before losing a tough one to eventual champion Charles Hayes. Nonetheless, the team responded extremely well after the disappointing loss and bounced back with a huge win in the bronze medal game to finish third overall in the province; it was truly a wonderful way to finish the year. While we don’t anticipate our competitive teams to be active again in the next few weeks we will continue to keep you apprised of all our athletic endeavours at the school.  Go Brentwood!
