Winter Blues? Humbug!

3 February 2019
Marius Felix, Deputy Head Student Life
Winter blues? Short rainy days? Humbug! While Brentwood cannot do anything to control the weather, we have student leaders and staff who offer a wide range of events and activities to engender a positive environment. While this may be our shortest term, it is by far our busiest in terms of community events. Listed below are some of the great opportunities for students to enjoy each other's company while being actively engaged: Red and Black Days and Jersey Day - On January 24th and January 29th, in support of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, students parked their school daily dress to wear Red and Black gear and packed the Foote Centre in supporting these teams in their games vs Shawnigan. On Saturday, January 26th, Hockey Night in Mill Bay and Jersey Day marked our annual hockey game between St. George's and Brentwood. The majority of the student body went to the game and had a great time. Afterwards, over 100 students stayed at the rink for the annual Mackenzie House Skate. Over the course of this term, the Food Services Team will offer international meals celebrating Italy, Nigeria, Latin America, China, America, Australia, Britain, Vietnam and Trinidad. In addition, the Great Burger Challenge, in which students entered their best burger recipes and voted on by the students, was a great success. Between January 24th and February 2nd, Spirit Week runs. The aforementioned Red and Black Days and Jersey Day, Winterlude Day on which the entire school heads to Mt. Washington for a variety of winter activities, special food days (gourmet grilled cheese, Ode to Bacon Day, All Day Breakfast Day) compliment Mackenzie and Allard Open Houses and the always popular Java Hut event. A collaboration day we also welcomed Shawnigan Lake School's Grad class to join our Grads for a Casino Night on February 1st. From February 21st through the 27th, Kindness Week reminds all of us about the great value and power of kindness, culminating in Anti-Bullying Day on February 27th. Finally, the school musical, West Side Story, runs from February 27th through March 2nd. It is always a highlight for the cast and the Brentwood community. Did I mention we continue to teach, as well as run an extensive arts and sports program? Be well, Marius Felix - Deputy Head
