People at Brentwood speak and write about family. They tell tales of brotherhood, bonding, atmosphere and support, but no place can compare to what goes on in the oldest original standing structure on campus. (Yes, that’s right: Alex House got a full renovation; we did not - until this summer.) We may not have much; our carpet may have been 45 years old; our water may taste rusty and metallic; our incredibly creepy crawl space may randomly contain an old sleeping bag and a tire, and that only the lucky may get hot showers in the second term, but despite all else, Whittall House has something no other houses do: backbone. We are a true family, 50 brothers strong, each one willing to take a hit for the other, or perhaps a caf duty. Through the toughest challenges, we persisted. My brothers and I have seen more than what’s in the brochure, have fought through the hardest Interhouse battles, and have vanquished the enemy (Privett). This is grit. Honour, perseverance, integrity, and respect are values we will carry forever. Members of Whittall House are members for life. This year was a gift, and I am in gratitude to every one of those 50 brothers. Also deserving credit are our outstanding duty staff: Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Thomas-Brown, Mr. Lawrence, Mrs. Whitney, Mr. Willie, and Mr. Bryant kept this house on lockdown, and ensured the fount of academic prosperity this year did not run dry. And finally, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Mr. Gage and Mr. Amiel. This year was a tremendous success.
