White Liars at Allard Open House

For the first time in over two years, and after a lengthy delay this year, this past weekend Allard House was finally able to open its doors and welcome the school community to its Open House, featuring no masks and even the year’s first indoor mosh pit. This year’s theme? White Lies.

White Lies, a classic party theme, consists of each person wearing a white t-shirt and then writing their “white lie” on it. The white lie is usually something that is true, but is written as if it isn’t. I know, I know. It’s a bit complicated. Here’s an example: If Shaquille O’Neal were to attend Allard Open House, he would write something along the lines of “I am small” on his t-shirt. This theme, as one could imagine, allowed students to show off their creativity and showcase their sense of humour. A white lie highlight was definitely “I am single” from Fabian H, Whittall ‘22. A fun fact about Fabian’s white lie is that it actually became true once his girlfriend found out about it.

As Houseparent Mrs Amiel knows all too well, Open Houses take a lot of preparation, but that prep time is something that she has learned to cherish: "One of my favourite parts of any open house is the bonding amongst the girls in the lead-up to the big night. In any house, it's an all-hands-on-deck affair that requires everyone to pitch in and lend a hand. From a late-night Costco run, to filming the movie, to party-proofing the house, to getting our amazing duty staff to volunteer their free Saturday night to chaperone teenagers, we all work together, and we're more united by the end of it."

As this was the first Open House in several months, excitement was through the roof. Attendance was extremely high, with the majority of the Brentwood population stopping by to check out the cup pong and the mosh pit and enjoy some pizza.

House Captain Gabi C, Allard ‘22 was a new student at Brentwood in Grade 11, meaning this was her first-ever Allard Open House, but it definitely surpassed her expectations: “I think we had a great turnout. It was super fun seeing everyone’s white lies and I think it was great being able to attend the indoor event without masks. I’m super proud of my whole house for working hard and being great hosts.”

Luckily, the next Open House is less than two weeks away as Alex House will be hosting on the first weekend after Easter Break. Then, it’s Ellis and Privett’s time to shine, the only two houses who missed out on hosting their Open Houses in the 2019-20 school year. That means that this will be their first opportunity to host in three years, so get excited. We’ll see you there!
