What a Racquet!
On the afternoon of May 18, Brentwood’s most skilled tennis players gathered at the courts for the annual Interhouse Tennis competition. The wind was blowing strong, but it was not nearly as fierce as the competitive spirit possessed by all of the athletes. The inherent social distancing of the sport allowed for real tennis matches to take place, so the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all. On seven of Brentwood’s eight courts, the players battled it out. Spectators dressed in their house colors cheered them on.
“I am so glad the girls came out and showed off their skills!” says Captain of the Alex Tennis Team, Annika M, Alex ‘21. Alex/Whittall surely gave the competition their best effort, defeating Hope/Privett and placing third overall. Lucas M, Whittall ‘23 had a notable 7-0 record in his singles match.
With feel-good hits blasting through the speakers, the matches continued. The echo of tennis balls and squeaks of shoes could be heard amongst the cries of victory, and the racket made by Ian C, Rogers ‘23 as he challenged every call.
Despite their current standings in the Interhouse competition, Allard/Rogers has persevered in every event, and their effort paid off on the court. Through many valiant victories, Allard/Rogers emerged on top of Hope/Privett and Alex/Whittall, placing second in this event. To no one’s surprise, the masters of all things athletic, Mack/Ellis walked away with a perfect record.
When asked about her thoughts halfway through the event, SAC and Interhouse Coordinator, Ms McLean, stated that there were, “lots of good competitive matches and everyone is having fun.”
Ms McLean is right. When it comes down to it, that is what the Interhouse competitions are about: a friendly rivalry between houses, but, more importantly, fun!
I would like to thank Ms McLean, the SAC, and the tennis coaches for putting on such a great event and best of luck to all the houses as this year’s Interhouse competition comes to a close.
