Western Canada Rugby Championships

19 August 2022
Following a fully-loaded few days of rugby at UBC for the annual Provincial Regional Championships, four old Brentonians were selected to represent British Columbia at the Western Canadian Rugby Championships. Trekker James, Ellis ‘22 was selected to the BC Blue team while the dream team of front row triplets Damian, Tanner and Corbin Hennessy, Rogers ‘22 were selected for Team Gold. A three-day development camp primed the lads for even higher caliber rugby and they were soon on their way. The event was hosted in Kelowna which was experiencing temperatures that touched the forties and were grueling all weekend.

Team BC Blue finished the round-robin undefeated gliding past Manitoba 28-0 on the first day, with slick passing and a quickly-gelling team chemistry. Their second game of the day saw Saskatchewan trying to achieve the upset but BC stayed in form and cleaned up well with a 31-0 performance. Team BC Gold, also finished the day with a resounding 31-0 victory against Saskatchewan and a hard-fought 12-10 loss to a tough Alberta team.

Day two held more fast pace, high-octane rugby and saw Team Blue clinch a narrow 8-0 win over Team Alberta while team Gold was able to shut out Manitoba 10-0. The last game of the day proved to be a thriller with back and forth action all game long. With Gold up in the dying seconds, team Blue was able to secure the 12-10 win with an emphatic last-play try.

The final day held a round robin for third where BC Gold was dominant and took a well-deserved bronze. Following this was the U18 boys final that would see BC Blue face off, once again, versus Alberta. Blue came out flying with an early score down the sideline igniting the crowd and giving them a glimpse of what was ahead. The game was pulsating and big hits were in no short supply which resulted in a yellow card for Alberta. This was an opportunity for BC and they were able to punch another one in. With the game coming to a close, another try along the sideline sealed the deal for Blue as they took the Championship 19-0.

On behalf of the team, thanks to all the coaches, trainers, managers, organizers and the city of Kelowna for all the hard work that was put into the event.
