West Coast Jazz Festival - For Rock Bands Too!

Monday, May 14, 2018 - By: Book P & Felix W, Privett ‘20

Both the Beginner and Advanced Rock Bands journeyed to the West Coast Jazz Festival hosted at the Vancouver Island University last week. This was the first time that the West Coast Jazz festival had a rock band category. This new opportunity was an amazing way to learn how music festivals work and to expose new musicians to the music world.

The Beginner Rock Band, led by their Captain Graeme M, Rogers ‘19, played three songs including the “Summer of 69’” by Bryan Adams, “Soak up the Sun” by Sheryl Crow and “Locked out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars. They performed very well with enthusiasm and skill. The advance rock band led by Captain Crawford C, Whittall ‘18, also played three songs which were “Let’s go Crazy” by Prince, “Just like Heaven” by the Cure and “Blues Hand me Down” by Vintage Trouble. Bennet L, Privett ‘18 said that the experience was “awesome and fun.” The Advanced Rock Band, without a doubt, kept true to their tradition of outstanding performances.

As for the result, the Advance group received Superior Gold from the judge and the Beginner Rock Band received and Excellent Silver.

Ine individual awards, Felix W, Privett ‘20 and Kenya B, Alex ‘20 both received Long & McQuade Awards for most outstanding male and female junior vocalist. Ileri S, Whittall ’18 & Francis FA, Rogers ’18 received the drum practising pad. In addition to that, Benett L, Privett ‘18, Axel E, Rogers ‘19, Book P,  Privett ‘20, Will W, Whittall ’19 and Jeremy H, Rogers ’19 received solo award certificates.

Both bands achieved impressive results and were invited to participate in the MusicFest Canada next year. They hope to keep improving and polishing up their acts in the hope that they will travel to Ottawa next year for MusicFest Canada.
