We're Back On Top

It's been a long time coming, but we’re back where we belong. After a shaky first two terms, Mackenzie/Ellis have clawed their way back to the top of the Interhouse podium.

That's right. We’re back. In a year with very few sporting events, which Mack/Ellis would often dominate, it has been tough for us to find our stride. We had a great start with the Eco-Challenge, but have struggled since then to find any sort of rhythm. Airband didn’t go so well, Jenga, and Smash Bros were a bit of a nightmare, and we were absolutely snubbed in Acapella.

We felt like the odds were stacked against us, with the majority of the events being subjective, and having judges and adjudicators with a “Unicorns aren’t real” mindset.

The team was able to turn the game around recently, with three big results:

The first W came from the extraordinary, the brilliant, and the ingenious Gemma S. The Mackenzie senior took the Spelling Bee crown for the second time in a row. “She was incredible” Oscar L, who was too chicken to enter the contest himself, managed. “I’ve never seen a showing of mental intelligence, and endurance of that magnitude combined into one.” Well played Gemma, well played.

Another massive result came from the Just Dance competition, where Maya V was the runner up after a fierce week full of dance. “I think spirit is so important!” Maya explained to me, “Trying your very hardest and being present in the moment is vital in these events.” Thank you Maya for the passion and great moves. We all look forward to seeing the results of the training you put young Henry through, as he carries on the family legacy in the coming years.

And last, but certainly not least, Mack/Ellis took the cake in Interhouse volleyball, or at least Mackenzie did. I won’t lie, we gents got carried in this event. The junior girls won their category, the Senior girls swept their division, and the mixed team - lead by the fearless Taylor K, the superstar Nate R, and the two unwavering House Captains Sydney H, and Erik L - saw no defeats. The senior boys were rather unlucky in their result. They were stuck in a three-way tie, and were bumped down to third due to point differential. That said, out of the possible 16 points Mack/Ellis could have earned, we took 14. Not a bad week for Interhouse.

Mack House, thank you. We know your backs must be sore from pulling us around lately, but we’re trying our best. We need to support each other after all, because Mr Neufeld made it perfectly clear how the rest of the school feels about us during his Thanksgiving speech: “Nobody really cares who wins Interhouse this year, just as long as it isn't Mack/Ellis.

Brentwood College Interhouse Trophy, we’re coming for you.
