Wellness Wednesdays have been a popular occasion throughout the year as many students have felt a higher level of stress because of the uncertainty that has come with Covid-19. On Thursday, May 13, we were given a wellness day, better known as Therapeutic Thursday, to recuperate from busy weeks prior.

The past few weeks were not filled with the most beautiful weather: there was an abundance of clouds, rain, and even hail, but the sunshine came out once again just in time for Thursday. During days that we are given to rest and relax, outdoor time is prioritized. Via email, Mr Sullivan insisted that everyone “Spends at least one hour outside” enjoying the fresh air, which was definitely fulfilled!

Traditionally, during a Wellness Wednesday, students are given the morning off and are able to do some relaxed prep in the house, with their arts resuming in the afternoon. However, this past Thursday everyone needed a full day off with no commitments, and that is exactly what we received. The day was treated with the same schedule as a Sunday, with students in full control of how they organized their day.

Both Mackenzie and Allard Houses took advantage of the day off and went on outings to appreciate the delightful day. Ms Olszewski organized a nature outing for Allard, and took some girls to Cherry Point Beach in Cobble Hill. She desperately wanted to share her favourite destination with “Brentwood students because of the peace and comfort it has brought [her] over the years.” The students who went were delighted when they “Rolled into a low-tide-sun-soaked-soul-soothing Cherry Point beach at its best!” Meanwhile, Mackenzie House trekked up Cobble Hill, which, according to Amy P, Mackenzie ‘22, “Was a challenge” but “The weather was perfect, the views were beautiful, and it felt so nice to see new faces from our community on the hike!”

The golfers were busy on Thursday competing against staff members at the Annual Staff vs. Student John Garvey Cup at the Cowichan Golf Club. Will P, Whittall ‘22 thinks that “It was an intense tournament of highs and lows, but in the end the staff did not quite have what it takes.” The students were happy because although the tournament was a draw, this meant that they kept the cup for another year!

The tennis courts were in full use, the waterfront was packed with excited swimmers and sunbathers, and grass volleyball nets were set up! Due to the number of students rocking a sunburn on Friday, including me, it is safe to say that everyone took full advantage of the day! Take Oscar L, Ellis ‘23, for example. All day, he was seen bouncing between the tennis courts and volleyball nets as he “Just could not get enough of the sun!”
Therapeutic Thursday was the highlight of the week, and with only twenty-two days to go, we are looking forward to our last Wellness day on May 26!
