Virtually the Head of the Charles Regatta

28 October 2020
The 56th annual Head of the Charles Regatta (HOTC) was certainly an event like no other as hundreds of athletes ranging from high school students to seniors competed virtually from their home waters. Seven Brentwood athletes were invited to compete in the 2020 HOTC regatta in both youth singles and doubles.

Competitors from across the world this year were each granted a home court advantage; the teams were able to complete their 4702 meter race within a one week period on their own stretch of water. In the years prior, athletes were required to travel to Boston, Massachusetts to compete on the infamous Charles River. The course is known to be challenging as the river has multiple sharp turns and the windy weather often disrupts the water. The Brentwood athletes were unable to experience the regatta to its full potential this year but certainly gave their all during the race in Mill Bay when they competed last Saturday.

Karl D ‘21 represented Brentwood in the Men’s Youth Single event where he placed 26th. Olin D ‘21 and Alec D ‘22 competed in the Men’s Youth Double event where they earned 13th. Two Women’s Youth Doubles were entered by Brentwood this year: Sarah ‘21 and Shaelyn L ‘21 competed and earned 8th place in addition to Lauren C ‘22 and Anika E ‘23 who placed 13th in the category. Every Brentwood athlete that competed came away from the race feeling proud of their performance and hopeful that next year they could compete on the Charles River.

Although the regatta was hosted in a virtual setting rather than in Boston, every Brentwood athlete trained hard leading up to the race and performed to their highest standard on the 17th of October.
