Victoria Idol: Laura and Ryan advance to the finals

Sunday, November 30, 2008 - By: phil newns

It was a tense moment at the semi-finals of Victoria Idol last night, as the MC read out the six performers who would advance to the finals of the Remax Victoria Idol competition. Brentwood students Ryan Bernsten and Laura Hawkins were called 5th and 6th respectively leaving Ryan, Laura and the busload of Brentwood supporters (including Mr. and Mrs. Pennells) in agonising suspense.   Laura once again showed her professional command of the stage by singing her flawless rendition of Julie Black’s “7 Day Fool”.  Ryan’s entertaining and animated delivery of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” left the audience wanting more, and the eyes of the estimated 250 people in the North Douglas Church in Victoria were certainly on him.  Both Ryan and Laura are “coached” by Phil Newns and Elizabeth MacIsaac, with their backing tracks recorded and arranged by Thomas Kinzel.  In the finals (Saturday 31st January), all competitors will perform two contrasting songs as they compete for the title of “Victoria idol” at the Royal Theatre in Victoria.  Tickets can be purchased for $15 through the McPherson Box Office (1-888-717-6121), or, if you would like to attend with the Brentwood students  “cheering squad”, contact Phil Newns who will take care of the booking. Showtime is 7 p.m. Our best wishes go out to Laura and Ryan.
