On Wednesday March 7th, Brentwood parent, Dr. Gabriel Rugalema, Director for the Food and Agricultural Organization for the United Nations in Sierra Leone, spoke to several senior Geography classes. He and his team are trying to solve the food insecurities of that West African nation.

In order to do so, agribusiness centers are being built in many communities throughout the country. In these communities anyone would be able to invest in the business. By doing so, the people in these communities will have money to use towards agricultural education that would aid in their crops becoming more prosperous. In turn, some of the money made by these farmers will be returned to the investors. This is one of the main tenets on these projects because Dr. Rugalema observed that to end poverty in these communities, we need to invest in their businesses through charities, and not give them “freebies”.

Dr. Rugalema also spoke to several Social Studies 11 classes which are using Sierra Leone as the case study for topics such as the Poverty Cycle, Demographic Transition Model and the how to interpret population pyramids.

Dr. Rugalema shared his thoughts on Sierra Leone and how we, as citizens of this world, can help with African development.
