Tough Break (Away) for Senior Girls Soccer

On May 16, the Senior Girls Soccer team’s three-month-long season came to an end during their second game at the Island Championships at the University of Victoria. After earning fourth at the Mid-Island Tournament in Nanaimo the previous week, the girls were eager to compete for a spot at provincials. Although the outcome was not what we were hoping for, the tournament was a huge success as we lost each game by only one or two goals.

Our novice goalkeeper, Elena F, Hope ‘25, deserves a massive shoutout as she only started playing a week prior to the tournament when our regular goalie got injured. Without hesitation, she stepped into the net with open arms (quite literally) ready to guard the net from speedy strikers and masterful midfielders.

The first game we played was against one of the best teams on the island, SMUS. We fought strongly until the whistle blew at the conclusion of the 80 minute game. Amber W, Alex ‘22 says “It’s hard to be sad that we didn’t make it to provincials when all I can think about is how much we have improved and grown as a team.”

Team Captain, Jocie L, Mack ‘22 says she is “so proud of how we played at this tournament, with goals from players in all different grades, we have a very well rounded team.”

The girls took this tournament as a chance to showcase their skills and leave their grit and sweat on the pitch. It was quite emotional for the six Grade 12s as it was the last tournament proudly wearing a B on their chest.

As a graduate, I want to thank Mr Barrett, Ms Fougner, and Griffin Fougner-Rukus for being such incredible coaches this year. Without them, our team would not have had such improvement and success.
