Every year, each boarding house provides a party for the rest of the school to enjoy on a Saturday night. Open houses are exciting social events in which students are welcome to enjoy food, drinks, and music. Doors open at eight o’clock and stay so for two hours, with an entry fee of eight dollars to fundraise for the school. The prefects of the house organize the decorations and theme, to be kept a secret until it is revealed at assembly, in a video format.

The first open house offered this year was hosted by Rogers, which took place on Saturday. Assembly on Thursday revealed the theme in a thrilling open house video that included every prefect, with the House Captain Rei K presenting it. The theme was time travel, so we students were to show up dressed either as a part of the future, or the 2000s. Low waisted jeans, excessively colourful eyeshadow, velvet sweaters, space buns, and striped flannel rocked the show. It was a smart theme that was inclusive of everyone’s wardrobes, and allowed for individual takes on the topics.

Different activities, provided by the Rogers boys, were offered at the house. A photo booth ran in front of a Rogers appropriate pirate backdrop, with pictures now available on SmugMug. Music blasted as Cameron P DJ’d the dance in the basement, complete with strobe lights and appropriately dazzling decor. Everyone is always excited to let loose on the dance floor in their fun costumes with their friends.

Open houses are fantastic ways to meet new people and enjoy an exciting night with friends and peers. One of the Rogers prefects, Dziva C, Rogers ‘19, who has been attending open houses for a year, said that “It was fun being in the video, and rewarding to be able to actually come up with the theme and give back to the students.” Further to his experience, Milla W, Allard ‘21, a first timer, said that she “Loved everybody’s outfits, and the effort put into the costumes. It was an event with good, positive energy that made me feel welcome.”

The open houses are a significant part of the student social community at Brentwood. They are well managed, fun, exciting events that we all look forward to. Rogers did a fantastic job kicking things off.
