Time To B.E.A.T. Waste!

25 April 2015

Because of the splendorous food booths in operation at this thriving 45th Brentwood Regatta, a fair amount of waste is prepared hourly; however, this will not simply become yet another dump in a landfill thanks to the efforts of Jordan S (Official Captain of Brentwood[‘s] Environmental Action Team) and Mrs. Laura Richardson (Head Teacher in charge of this environmental initiative) and their BEAT team. Perhaps you have just tried a delicious selection of Babushka’s perogies and are now left with a small empty plate in your hand. Will you haphazardly toss it in the air for the gulls to deal with? No! Not only are birds simply incapable of such environmental tasks, but also Brentwood has over 20 different recycling stations ready for action in every corner of our waterfront campus. We are in support of a Regatta as green as untouched forests, and here’s how we put that mantra into action. Four bins, each with a specific purpose: Bin 1: Refundables. This consists of just about any liquid container (apart from milk, darn you cows), and we take these plastics and glass back to the nearby recycling depot for a miniature monetary compensation and a healthy means of disposal via recycling. Bin 2: Recyclables. Be it cardboard, plastic, metal, or even glass, this is the bin to throw it in. Shoot to score, Carmelo, and put all your clean paper in here. Bin 3: Compostables. All your organic matter will go in here! Not only paper cups, bowls, and plates, but also all your food scraps. By doing this we can even further our environmental efforts with this compostable distinction, and provide food for worms - just like Polonius. Bin 4: Garbage. Fine. If you really, really need to. We only have one planet until we terraform Mars, so let’s make our waste sorting count! Toby CH, Privett ‘15
