Three Weeks In

Since joining the Brentwood College School family three weeks ago, my life has changed drastically. Despite walking into a brand new environment on the first day with no friends around, I knew soon after the initial nervousness that I was going to feel right at home. With my amazing new houseparents, teachers, peers and rowing crew I have found a strong sense of community and welcoming. It can be a little overwhelming during the first few weeks, but now that the dust has settled, I can see nothing but more positive experiences waiting to happen!

Being in Allard House, I find myself forming and strengthening bonds with the other Mermaids around me. The orientation assistants have been by our sides since the very beginning and have helped the new students in so many ways. New Grade 11 student Jette D in Allard says “Everybody is so welcoming and even though I have only been here for three weeks, I already feel like I have been a part of the Brentwood community for a long time. I am so happy to have found a place where I truly belong!” The feeling is clearly mutual between all of the new students and the returning Allard girls.

I was quite nervous to be at a new school, let alone to be joining a new rowing crew. To row in a boat with three new faces is a pretty daunting task. This is only made more intimidating by the fact that we got right into practicing for our trip to the Head of the Charles Regatta in mid-October. I have found myself with the biggest stroke of luck recently, primarily with the amazing coaches that we have helping us to prepare for our race! I truly believe that we are well on our way to becoming a real family. I mean, we do spend most of our time together! Never have I had so much fun at a school before, with the house fashion shows, amongst other traditions, and being with my newfound friends all the time!

Returning Grade 11 student Dylan K in Rogers recalls his first few weeks at Brentwood as being “Equal parts terrifying and welcoming. It is always hard to start at a new school, but now that I have been here for three years, I can’t even imagine not going here! After the initial shock of it all, you begin to realize that everyone around you is here to help and that it's impossible to go without somebody supporting you or helping you along.”

Now, I don’t yet know what to make of being here, but I do know that I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to be living such an absolute dream.
