Duncan area resident Thomas Kinzel was named as a top ten contender in the CBC Anthem Challenge on Monday night's The Hour news show hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos (September 29, 8:30 pm). The 23 year-old local performer/composer/producer is becoming well known as one of the region's most promising rising talents. The CBC's nation-wide search for a new Hockey Night in Canada theme drew a staggering 15,000 entries from across the country. The selection process involved some of the country's top industry insiders including Vancouver's Bob Rock.
"I was asked to play at the event to acknowledge Duncan's placement in the Guiness Book of Records for the world's largest hockey stick around the time of doing this, so it was a great honour to be chosen." explains Kinzel when asked about the inspiration behind the song entitled This is Canada's Night! Kinzel received training from an early age from South African jazz pianist Phil Newns, who is Head of Music at Brentwood College.
The only participant from BC to be named in the top ten, Kinzel's placement in this prestigious contest is testament to his skill as a composer. He is currently assistant producer at one of the Island's top recording facilities, the Woodshop Studio where he shares his expertise with corporate clients and local emerging artists. He is also in high demand for live performances with such artists as Eugene Smith, Scott McGill, Phil Newns and  Paul Wainwright.
