Thinking Outside of the Box

19 May 2018
David McCarthy - Director of Learning
As the third term swings into full gear with sporting events, arts performances and the energy that spring weather brings, it is also a great time for learning outside of the classroom, both on campus and beyond. Just this past week several groups explored their subjects 'al fresco'. Our Grade 9 class were taken on the annual 'Great Circle' tour with stops at Botanical Beach on the West Coast where the marine biology is revealed at low tide and at 'Avatar' Grove, an old growth forest enclave where naturalists gave them a tour of the giant cedars and Douglas Firs.  Students in Grade 10 English visited local elementary schools to work with the young readers in their 'Kid-lit' genre unit which involves them in writing and illustrating a children's storybook. Grade 11 physics students went to Duncan to study the forces of connected with a variety of fairground rides. Their tasks involved calculations and problem solving that encompassed a review of the whole year's work in this course. On campus the First Nations 12 class were captivated by a talk and demonstration on drumming by a local expert as a prelude to a workshop on drum-making later this week. It was a great example of how the outdoor teaching space of the amphitheatre can enhance the learning environment for these types of occasions.  Environmental Science AP students are busy creating a school garden where a variety of projects can be constructed, some of which involve growing food for the local community. Squeezing in these activities without disrupting other classes has been made considerably easier with the new timetable that offers longer teaching blocks. Our Academic Plan makes a commitment to experiential learning which many of our classes are enjoying to a greater extent this year. As a faculty, we strongly believe in connecting our students with the world beyond our gates, applying lessons to the society around us and creating memorable experiences that will complement and reinforce the classroom-based learning.
