The Stepping Stones to Capstone

As graduation approaches, students in British Columbia are tasked with meeting a series of requirements. One of the most significant and intimidating of these is the Capstone presentation. As part of the BC Curriculum, students must produce a presentation that outlines their learning journey and highlights their career education. By the end of April, every Grade 12 student will have presented their Capstone to their advisors, one step closer to receiving their diploma.

The Capstone presentations involve several parts, and students often choose to create a website to showcase their work. The website typically includes different pages dedicated to four themes. The first is My Future, which explores career options and post-secondary placement. The second is My Journey, which showcases both personal and learning journeys. The third is My Reflections, which is entirely dedicated to reflections on core competencies and portfolio entries from both Grade 10 and 12. Finally, the fourth page is My Passions, which highlights activities, hobbies, personal projects, pursuits, and achievements.

While many students find Capstone presentations daunting, they are also a rewarding task. "Even though there is a lot of work to be done, I love looking back on my journey through school and everything I accomplished," expressed Sarah O, a Hope '23 student. The reflective aspect of these presentations is crucial because they provide a summary of each individual's journey through high school. Many students find themselves looking back at their Capstone after graduation, feeling proud of their hard work and accomplishments throughout their high school career.

Every Grade 12 advisor has the privilege of watching and reviewing all Capstone presentations from their advisees. By now, every student should have booked a day to present their Capstone to their advisor before May 1st. Ms Widenmaier, an advisor to some Hope Grade 12s, stated that, "I look forward to the creative ways that my advisees convey their future plans - what their plans are for the journey ahead, what they remember from school, and how they will carry those memories forward."

Capstone presentations are essential in every student's journey to graduation. They provide students with an opportunity to creatively summarize their post-secondary plans as well as their high school experiences. So let's look forward to everyone's Capstone presentations and celebrate their accomplishments!
