The Right Fit

11 September 2022

In another era, David Calder might have been a war hero, but on this day, at our first formal assembly of the year on Friday, the medal hanging from his left lapel seemed sweetly anachronistic. Was he wearing something that had belonged to his great grandfather? Was this a special occasion? Indeed, it was. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, had died the previous day.

“I couldn’t think of a better time to wear it,” he commented reverently.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal had been created in 2012 to honour the Queen’s 60 years on the throne, and also to acknowledge Canadians who had served their communities and country at an extraordinary level. A four-time Olympian and silver medallist, Mr Calder, Privett ‘96 and our new Head of Rowing, fit - and continues to fit - this bill magnificently.
