The Perfect Uniform

Walking into the Vancouver Convention Center on May 20th, 2011 you would think you were at the Golden Globes or the Oscars. But, with no red carpet in sight, you would have to think again. No, this event was not to honor actors, directors, or movie stars at all: it was Brentwood's annual graduation dinner. I could tell you all about the speeches, the parents, or the singing, but instead I want to talk fashion.

As the grads walked up in groups of four to seven, the female line ups left many spectators speechless. The paparazzi parents on the sidelines snapped away as every girl lived her dream of parading up to the stage in the gown she had hunted for since Christmas break. Not a hair lay out of place, every eyelash was impeccably groomed. Magical abilities to walk in six inch heels were suddenly bestowed upon each girl in that hall, and as they floated forward, gasps and awes could be heard from all.

The trend this year was, without a doubt, floor length. Many girls chose the classic: a floor grazing gown with an empire waist (usually bejeweled). A wide variety of colors could be observed, notably red and blue. Other grads went against the grain and chose a more vintage approach, like Morgan L, who wore a lovely mauve number that was flapper inspired and truly visionary. Metallics were also all the rage this year, and many opted for fun golds and liquid silvers.

Some girls chose the unexpected and embraced their cultural heritage. Indian saris and Korean traditional dresses were simply stunning, and really changed it up for fashion obsessed observers. Jazleen D and Tara V simply glowed in their saris and tasteful accessories. As the voluminous Korean dresses of Christina H and Lisa K passed, jaws dropped and girls stared in a mixture of jealousy and amazement at the dress's  intensity and character.

Each year the whispers of who's wearing what grow slowly louder as the graduation dinner approaches. This year certainly did not disappoint. Every girl looked truly beautiful and radiant in their gowns.
