The Perfect Art to Relax Into

Brentwood provides its students opportunities to express themselves - and do what they love - as well as allow us to explore other paths. Most people would agree that doing art work is another way to relax your mind without any competitive situation, or any anxiety that is created when dealing with academic work. Art is a big part of our community. Brentwood offers multiple choices of art programs such as 3D art, pottery, rock band, debate, dance, musical, photography, choir, guitar, winds & jazz ensembles, etc. There are plenty of art resources for students to explore.

Drawing and Painting is one of the art classes at Brentwood that we joined and love. The class is taught by Ms Mannion, who is not only a great art teacher but also a professional dancer.

We have built our technique and skills step by step. First by turning a circle into a sphere by using light, shadow, and shading. We then moved from basic drawing and painting to our first project - black and white collage. Currently we are creating a black and white collage under the topic “The Beginning of New Things”. This is a piece of art made by cutting and sticking various materials such as magazines, newspaper, or even clothes. We use many different techniques, materials, and almost no restrictions to your creativity. Sometimes we change the art room into a dance floor where we learn the basics and some exquisite dances. I would even say that this was one of the funniest things I did in a long time.

Our artistic side is shown from the very moment we were welcomed into the classroom. It allows people to express their true emotions within their art. The classroom has a wealth of natural light that shines through giant windows. A classical playlist of retro songs from Ms Mannion has generated a positive learning environment. She is very supportive and is always coming up with creative art projects. Her willingness to help us strive and the gratitude she brings up in class contribute to a positive impact of the studio’s vibe, creating a relaxed individual surrounding.

Once I was rushing to finish before the bell rang and Ms Mannion said “When you are deeply involved with your ideas, hours can pass away as fast as seconds”. I completely agree with that statement.

If you don't have something interesting on your mind from the beginning onwards, however, there is no reason to feel pressured. Just like Ms Mannion stated, “I like drawing and painting because I don't have to know my ideas right away. We can experiment with different ideas that will grow out of this.”

Drawing and painting class gives students the freedom to create their art pieces while also learning how to work on your own. You can calm down and have a chat with other peers, express your weirdest ideas, involve lots of different kinds of handwork and learn new techniques. We have expanded our knowledge and developed our skills through the process. This variety of things you can do just adds up,  and by that, creates a great, unforgettable experience. We are looking forward to starting our next project.
