The Life of Ellis

Ellis House is composed of a great range of gentlemen and house parents. It also contains hard-working duty staff, who are the backbone of Ellis. The delight presented to the Ellis boys, at the beginning of each week, comes from the hilarious joke delivered by Mr. Cowie on Monday nights. Typically, this joke consists of a historical European element that includes Ellis Alumni. Mr. Cowie’s sense of humour (and his mustache) have been part of Brentwood’s community for years and we Ellis boys are proud that it belongs to our house.  Mr. Skardal’s main duty is to keep the house as quiet as it can get. He is as bright as a light bulb and he’ll be found on Tuesday night duty in the house. The prevailing shushing sound is how you know he has come into Ellis as he forces everyone to stop talking and read a book instead of wasting their precious time watching YouTube.  Wednesday nights are brought to you by Mr. Sullivan. He who loves Law and Order is as legendary as his epic basketball calves. Although he retired as House Parent last year, he still believes he is the supreme leader of Ellis, and really likes to keep the house under control.  Thursdays are definitely the most relaxing as Mr. Luna roams the halls with his soothing voice inspiring students to throw away their cellphones and pick up the pencil, pens, and paintbrushes. He is always open and willing to discuss anything about arts and some say Mr. Luna is definitely the Bob Ross of Ellis. There is a lot of diversity in the house, and the house parents show it. Mr. Wismer, on the one hand, can barely count how many kids he has: he is easy going. At the other end of the house, Mr. Barrett is still looking for the hammer he lent one of us - we’ll find it, we promise Mr Barrett. He is our Assistant House Parent and the Head of Soccer. Everyone on the Brentwood campus knows that Ellis is the best house, hence the famous expression: Ellis House, Best House. According to our House Captain, Sebastian M ‘19 “There is no better house than Ellis House; there is no better group of boys, than the Ellis Boys; there is no better staff than the Ellis Staff.” Not only does Ellis have of the most memorable people around campus, but we are also back-to-back Interhouse winners with our sisters in Mackenzie.  Ellis House culture comes from all around the world. Mathew M ‘19 is originally from South Africa, Alex B ‘19 is from Hong Kong and Australia. Samuel S ‘19 arrived at Brentwood from Saudi Arabia while Sergey ‘21, as you can imagine, comes from Kazakhstan. Although we have the smallest house on campus, we, without a doubt, have the biggest hearts. We welcome each other with open arms no matter what our problems are. Ellis House, Best House.
