The String Ensemble and the Jazz Band recently had the opportunity to attend the 46th annual MusicFest Canada at the University of Toronto (Victoria University, Faculty of Music, Emmanuel College). During the week-long event, both groups received adjudication from skilled musicians, and had the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds of students and performers. Mr. Newns stated he was “very proud” of both groups’ hard work and determination. The Jazz Band performed three classics, “125th Street Blues”, “Nostalgia in Times Square” and “Angel Eyes”. While the band played with skill and rigour, soloists Alex P, Privett ‘18, Ben R, Ellis ‘20, Jeremy H, Rodgers ‘19, and Oliver W, Privett ‘18 impressed the judges with their musical artistry. Alex P, Privett ‘18, a fine member of the Jazz Band who is graduating this year, said “I’m so glad for the opportunities that the Brentwood Jazz Band has given me. I’ve made friends and learned so much”. The band’s rigorous attention to detail resulted in a Silver award after their performance. During the week-long event full of music and learning, MusicFest inspired thousands of young musicians from across Canada by presenting, in concert, some of the most outstanding artists and ensembles in North America. When the Jazz Band wasn’t hard at work, they were viewing Toronto’s finest music ensembles, such as the University of Toronto’s Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. Ben Z, Privett ‘21 said he was “very happy to witness experienced musicians perform”. The Jazz Band has used their adjudication and newfound knowledge to prepare for Brentwood’s annual Concert For a Summer’s Eve. This is taking place on June 7th and 8th.  Ben R, Ellis ‘20 & Christopher B, Rodgers ‘20
