The Infallible Junior Footballers

When you think of Junior Boys Soccer, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For some, it could be the combination of speed and skill possessed by Avik B. For others, it is the sheer quad strength and shot power of none other than Youki I, and for a small number, it is Davis P. This year, we saw it all. Although we were not able to play in any formal matches, do not think for one moment that this season was not one to be remembered.

Our first sessions consisted of socially-distanced technical work. In the heat of late September, the studs of the Juniors shone. Joffre D would ping with pinpoint accuracy in partner passing and Dylan G showed feline reflexes in every rapid-fire shooting drill.

After a brief halt due to the smoke from wildfires south of Mt Baker, the lads enjoyed an afternoon of soccer golf on Gillespie Green. Jack D brought his driver of a right foot, Milan P showed his touch around the rim coexists with his touch on the turf and Jonathan H gave a performance comparable to Phil Mickelson at the 2004 Masters.

After the first month of distanced play and technical mastery, the team integrated more game-like scenarios into each session. This allowed all of the pieces to come together. Defensive pairings like Zander L and Hudson K worked the backline and Christopher S showed his tiger-like attacking prowess.

This led to a final month of inter-cohort scrimmaging as well as technical challenges that allowed this team to come together as one unit. Even though the season ended without a single Mid-Island League fixture and the team was unable to defend its title as Threepeat ISA champions, it was a season like no other with an unbelievable group of boys. We give thanks to our three leading men, the king of the ping, Mr Veenema, the wunderkid, Mr Collis Handford, and the man behind all the magic, Mr Collis. As Oscar Long says, Junior Soccer will continue to “rock on”.
