The Great Escape from Prep

It’s official, we have found the best way to get out of prep! Every Wednesday evening for the past few weeks, a dedicated group of students has sacrificed/escaped their prep to do something way more exciting: Cowichan Spring League Field Hockey.   Our team consists of players from all of Brentwood’s field hockey teams as well as a few others who are either new or did not play in first term. Our wonderful coach, Mrs. Alanna Martin, instructs our diverse team of Brentwood students mixed with other Cowichan Valley youth. Her unflagging enthusiasm, combined with her immense knowledge of the sport, make her a fantastic coach. Spring League is U19 and so students from all grades can participate. In addition, it includes both genders, allowing us to have a secret weapon: Josh S, Rogers ‘14. Not only is he a fabulous mid-field, but all the girls on the opposing teams tend to trip over themselves when they hear his charming British accent, giving us a great advantage. The other perk to being in Spring League is the occasional DQ stop, which the whole team greatly appreciates. The team is still getting used to each other, but we have had a terrific start. Bronwen S, Alex ‘14 has made great hits up the sides and Sarah H, Alex ‘14 has been a valuable part of our defense.  Brooke M, Alex ‘16 has enjoyed running and taking shots on net from her favourite left wing position.   Our Spring League team, which were unofficially dubbed “The Bananas” in a split-second cheer circle decision, will continue to play every Wednesday almost until the end of the year. Even though we feel terribly traitorous for wearing yellow uniforms (or “gold” as Shawnigan desperately tries to call it) we’re still having tons of fun. Article and Photo by Jaclyn C, Alex ‘16
