The Friendship Cup Runneth Over

September 16th & 17th Brentwood hosted the 12th annual Friendship Cup Field Hockey Tournament. Shawnigan Lake School were co-hosts as games were played there as well as at the Cowichan Sportsplex.

Twelve teams entered the tournament and there was a wide range of experience and talent. Since the tournament is held so early in the season, it emulates its name: The Friendship Cup.  Schools came with however many athletes they could muster and some teams even shared players. It was a festival setting which means that at the start of each game one team passes the ball to their opponent symbolizing that we are all here to play and have fun.

Make no mistake, there was definitely an element of competiveness and the top teams in the pools love nothing more than to have their name engraved on the trophy.  The honours this year went to Shawnigan as they defeated Cowichan High 4-1 in the final.

Having lost many senior players last year, and with most of the Grade 12 players missing the tournament due to the Biology 12AP field trip to the Bamfield Marine Station, the Brentwood team was young. Our goal was to improve, work on our communication and passing and to have fun. We lost our opening game 3-0 to Frances Kelsey which is an experienced AAA school. Our girls, however, rebounded and tied the next three games 0-0. Muscles were sore as everyone worked hard.

Mrs. Warner and I were very proud of how the team played and the manner in which they represented the school. We are looking forward to working with the team this year.

Mrs. Alanna Martin, Coach
