The Colour Purple

How do you read so many books?

It's always been ingrained in me to read books because my mom's a big reader and her mom's a big reader. When I was younger, I didn't appreciate reading. I always saw it as a task and I wasn't very good at it. I think that's why I saw it as a task. As I got older, as I read, I couldn't put down the books and I'd fly through them. It's about whether the book is good or not. If I'm enjoying the book, it will take me a day to finish. I prefer it to Netflix or to anything else. So I guess I just read so much because I genuinely enjoy it.

What is the best book you read this year?

That’s difficult. I've read some really good books this year but also some interesting and thought-provoking books. I would say, honestly, The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Even though it was a classroom book, I read that book so fast. I took it on vacation with me. I read it sitting by the pool. I really enjoyed it: I really like diary books. I like when it's from the perspective of the person and it's very personal.

What is the most surprising book you've read this year?

Two books. I cannot choose. I read How Green Were the Nazis? by Franz-Josef Bruggemeier. This book talks all about the Nazis and their environmental views. It's kind of ironic because they were environmentally friendly in the beginning. They were murdering so many people, but the environment was important to them. That was very odd to me. It was well written and factual so it wasn't too biased. I'm interested in learning about the Holocaust. I also read Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks, which is written diary style, about a girl who gets addicted to LSD and it's kind of her downfall. It's written like she's sometimes actively on acid and it's just the most mind-blowing things. It's a tearjerker, but it really puts another person's life into perspective.

What are you reading now?

I just finished The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Unpopular opinion: I did not enjoy it. I also finished Macbeth with our class. Now I'm looking at the classics. I think I'm going to read Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.

Is it hard to find books right now?

Not at all. My mom has a kindle, that's number one. My parents are very passionate about me reading, so I can order a book online. I have a library card, which is very helpful, because you can get books online. It's free to sign up. You just sign up and it's unlimited books. So I can do that though I do much prefer to just hold a book in my hand. So a lot of it is just what we have in the house. My mom reads a book a day, she swaps with my grandmother, she swaps with her friends. So I take those. Hannah P, Alex '21
