The BEAT has Begun!

10 October 2013

This year the Brentwood Environmental Action Team (BEAT) is aiming to highlight globally-designated days by proposing ideas and activities for Brentwood to partake in. On October 1st, 2013 it was World Vegetarian Day. Brentwood actively participated by having superb options at the sandwich and salad bars as well as at the hot food counter. Spanakopita and vegetarian lasagna was served for lunch and dinner; the meals were well received by many students and staff though some meat lovers found the adjustment difficult. Many students and staff at Brentwood are, in fact, vegetarian, and others are ‘conscientious omnivores’. Eating less meat significantly reduces our carbon footprint, decreases our susceptibility to many diseases, builds stronger bones, and helps us live longer. Going vegetarian is definitely something to consider. As Mr. Collis, Head of English and one the Brentwood’s most energetic and amusing teachers observed, “I eat nothing with a face as I believe all animals have the same rights to life that my pets do.” That’s something to chew on!
