This past weekend we brought the entire club up to the West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park to compete in the final BC regatta of our 2011 season. Racing over 2000 meters, all of our programmes had some very good results.

For the Senior Boys, the purpose of racing at the Shawnigan Lake Regatta was not about the points but about finding the right combinations for the CSSRA Championships in three weeks. As well, we had a number of athletes who were time trialing for the Western Canada Summer Games BC team. On Saturday morning Cam Y and Andrew Y placed 4th in their time trial for the Junior pair. In the final, they placed 5th. Ruben S, in his last regatta representing Brentwood before heading back to Germany to try out for the German Junior National team, won his time trial in the Jr A single and then cruised to victory for the first win, by a Brentwood athlete, in this event since Malcolm Howard in 1999.

Paiton B, Sean H, Brett L, Michael L and Channing B placed third in their heat of the Jr. A 72 kg 4+. In the final, they rowed an excellent race winning the silver medal, only three seconds behind the winning crew from Vancouver College. They have qualified for the National Championships in St. Catharines.

Cameron Y, Martin B, Lance B, Andrew C and Jack K raced in the Jr. A 4+. This was a straight final. This new combination was racing to see if they could qualify for the CSSRA championships. In the end, they won by nineteen seconds. They too have qualified for the National Championships. Later in the day Paiton B, Sean H, Dylan G, (on loan from the First XV), Jannick H, Tristan K, Brett L, Daniel D, Michael L and Channing B, had a great last 500 meters to pass Gorge to win the bronze medal in the Jr. A JV eight.

On Sunday morning Ruben S and Martin B won the time trial in the Jr. A 2x by 2.7 seconds over Cameron Y and Lance B. Both crews were well ahead of the other sixteen crews. Cameron and Lance did not race in the final, but, Ruben and Martin raced at the front of the pack to win in a time of 6:58. This was Ruben’s final race in Brentwood colours. On behalf of Brentwood, we would like to thank Ruben for his contributions this year and we would like to wish him all the best back in Germany.

The same lightweight coxed four from Saturday (Paiton B, Sean H, Brett L, Michael L and Channing B), raced in the Jr. A JV coxed four on Sunday afternoon. In a great race with St. Michaels School, the Brentwood crew won in a final sprint to claim the gold medal.

In the Jr. A 8+ final, there were seven crews. The last time Brentwood won this event was in 2007. For 2000 meters we exchanged the lead with St. Georges. In the final 200 meters, Brentwood put on a push that extended their lead by a few feet. In the end, we won the race by 0.7 seconds. Winning in a time of 6:06 were of Sean H, Jason M, Toby G, Daniel H, Andrew C, Lance B, Martin B, Cameron Y and Jack K.

At the end of the regatta Rowing Canada had invited Martin B and Lance B to attend the Selection Camp for the Junior National team, which will compete in the Junior World Rowing Championships. These championships will take place on the 2012 Olympic course at Eton College, just outside London, England.

On what was an exciting weekend of rowing, the Brentwood women had a breakout performance. On Saturday, Claire V finished lengths ahead of the pack to win the Jr. A 1x, while Stacey K and Steph T placed a strong 3rd in the pair. Claire, Deirdre H, Ailish T, and Sadie C finished 3rd in the Jr. A quad, and Spencer B, Spencer M, Kelsey S, Ximena C, and Arpita M finished 3rd in the Jr. B. Novice coxed four. On Sunday, results were highlighted by Claire and Deirdre with a big win in the Jr A 2x. It was a great weekend for the girls and we look forward to seeing some strong CSSRA results from the group.

The Jr boys’ top finish was a clear win in the Jr B 2X by Tom L and Nick R. Next, we had nail-biter in the Jr B 8+ (Rielly M, Nick R, Ian S, Blaine W, Jon H, Toby D, Hayden F, Harrison B, Nick W) to finish half a second behind Vancouver College. Our Jr B single scullers had great results, finishing 2nd (Tom L) and 3rd (Nick R) in a tough field. The Jr B JV and 72kg 8+ of Rielly M, Toby D, Jon H, Harrison B, Nick W, Liam K, Jeff L, Daniel KBR and Woody L were second, also behind Vancouver College, and the Jr B Novice 2X of Harrison B and Liam K finished 3rd. Other Junior B boys competing in this regatta were Frank Z, Jeen S, Calvin H, Kelly A, Keenan G, Javier O, Carlos DTA, Parker G, Donovan McK, Tom C, Trenton G, Jasper S, Nick Wa, Shawn H and Andrew Y. An injury kept Jack H from competing.
