Testing Positive for Spirit, Not COVID-19

After a thrilling season in 2019-2020, the Junior Girls Basketball team was eager to get back on the court. Last year, for the first time in school history, Brentwood’s Junior Girls qualified for the Provincial Championships. They went in underdogs, and came out with a 3-1 record, playing mostly AAA and AAAA schools.

The team is full of multi-sport athletes, many of whom played competitive sports first term, such as volleyball or field hockey. As expected, they were ready to get back on the court and prepare for the season. Sadly, due to COVID-19, the team is unable to participate in any games or tournaments for the time being, but that is not stopping them from pushing themselves every practice.

Jocie L and Alex H were two of last year's starters who have now moved up to the Senior squad. Eric E, Sophie B, Yudi A, and Kali F are also great athletes and hard-working teammates who will all be missed by the junior squad, but they are thrilled to put 100% into whatever season presents itself.

Before Winter Break, the squad was allowed to practice inside their cohorts with some contact. Starting senior, Jocie L, stated that she is “really thankful to be able to still compete inside our houses.” During Camp Brentwood 4 (CB4), the Eldon and Anne Foote Athletic Centre was shut down to help prevent the spread of any possible virus. This meant that all sports practices were outside, rain or shine. Luckily enough for us, there was little rain.

Our three coaches, Ms Napier, Mr Pasquale, and Ms Manton did their best to make this an enjoyable experience for us all. And now most of you are likely thinking, “Why ON EARTH would anyone want to go for a run, or workout led by a fitness superstar - Ms Manton?” Really, I could not tell you, but we do it anyway, and find a way to enjoy ourselves in the process.

All jokes aside, Ms Manton’s positive attitude was the only thing infecting the basketball squad. She has a way of pushing us, while still making workouts fun, and “From the whole team we say thank you!” chimed Miranda NP, Alex ‘23.

As Camp Brentwood came to a close, the team was elated to get back and work on some skills, and even play a few transition games to get us back in shape. Fingers crossed for the rest of the season, because if it comes, we know we’ll be ready!
