Term 1 Basketball During COVID

Sports are usually a low priority during a global pandemic, however here at Brentwood students make sure sports are the second most important thing - after academics of course. Basketball during COVID has been a challenge, but playing with mitigation strategies is way better than not playing at all.

COVID has made basketball practices different: we are not allowed to play contact games such as 1-on-1 or full court scrimmages unless we are playing someone within our cohort, however we are allowed to perform shooting drills while distanced outside our cohorts.

These mitigation strategies don't really hold us down too much during the first term of basketball as we are mostly just running in every way shape and form. As Coach Gage likes to say, “Gents, you first need to be physically fit to play the game.” During one practice Feury K, Whittall ‘21 said: “Experiencing my fourth year of term 1 basketball has made me realize two things: to always bring your practice top and to invest in one of those massage gun things for your quads.”

Since basketball has the smallest number of people on a team per sport, the small group of players becomes a family and it all starts in term 1. Olin D, Whittall ‘21 says, “Playing basketball at Brentwood since grade 9 has given me a second family on and off the court. It's made me understand that basketball isn't just a way to get fit or work out, it’s a way of meeting new people and forming new relationships through the sport.”

Term 1 basketball is coming to an end soon and the boys are excited with the hopes that the team will have a competitive season. We may not have a season currently, but that doesnt stop the team and Coach Gage from sacrificing free time and putting in the work.
