Sunday Ski Trips

Along with many of the special activities offered at Brentwood, one of my favourites is a Sunday ski trip. Every Sunday a bus heads up to our local mountain, offering students the opportunity to get off campus and go play in the snow for a day.  Mt. Washington is a fun mountain with all terrain spanning from fun easy green runs all the way to advanced shoots and epic moguls. Many student at the school come from countries that do not have snow or mountains nearby, so this is a great way to explore something new. You can choose to rent ski gear or go with a more relaxed day of tubing or nordic skiing.  I asked some students why they thought this was a good thing to offer at the school. “I think this is a great way for students to get off campus and experience a very different but beautiful part of Vancouver Island” said Ashley D. The bus leaves at 6:10am arriving at the base of the mountain just in time for the first runs of the day. Lifts run from 9 until 3:30 giving students a full action-packed day with the sport of their choice: “A Sunday ski trip is a chance to ski with your friends and a great way to explore a very different environment” reflected Yannick H. Second term is the perfect time to get out and ski, especially because the weather in Mill Bay is not always the type where one would choose to go for a run.  There are sic chair lifts on the mountain so it is rare to wait for more than 15 minutes for a run. The lodge at Mt. Washington offers food, rentals, a ski store and a board shop where you can get your equipment repaired. The school also sends every student with a lunch making it a very affordable trip.  The mountain has a base of 210 cm meaning everything on the mountain is open. The front of the hill is groomed with plenty of awesome trees, and on the back you can find plenty of untracked snow and some great backcountry skiing. These Sunday trips are the perfect way to get out and explore the outdoors with your friends while getting a great workout. If skiing is something that interests you, I highly recommend grabbing a friend and spending a day on the mountain.  Noah H, Privett ‘19
