Sunday Morning Football

Sunday morning at Brentwood is something that each and every student cherishes and holds dearly. It is a sacred time of rest and relaxation where hours upon hours of sleep are caught up on and no one is to be disturbed.

However, on Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30, while the rest of the school population is tucked away in bed, a dedicated group of athletes are out on the turf grinding and ferociously competing for football glory.

Led by wannabe NFLer Mr Toby “Toe-Drag Swag” Collis Handford, students come to the turf to learn the ropes with some basic routes that are quickly woven into intense all-out games. When asked about the program’s controversial start time, Mr Collis Handford did not mince his words: “When I first announced that Flag Football would take place at 8:30 AM, I was met with vociferous opposition from teenagers who covet their sleep-ins like priceless trophies. Touchdowns are deaf to such complaints: the program stuck with the 8:30 AM kick-off and, most encouragingly, at least one member of each of the eight boarding houses has attended Flag Football despite its early kick-off. No better way to start the day!”

To maintain social distancing at all times, competitors who are in different learning groups must abide by the six feet rule. This means that whenever the ball carrier is within six feet of a defender in a different learning group, the play is dead. This often results in desperate defenders screaming “SIX FEET! SIX FEET!” at a receiver who is 30 feet in front of them and already wheeling away in celebration.

Assistant Head Prefect, Athletics Abby S, Mackenzie ‘21 has been to every practice so far and has noticed the uptick in attendance, saying “At the beginning, the early start time scared a lot of people off, but once word got around about how fun the program was, many people decided to sacrifice their sleep in and join in on the action.”

There have been many standout players so far, most notable of whom are Harbalneet N, Rogers ‘22, whose raw speed and power have likened him to former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, and Mr Collis, who was somehow able to overcome the water-tight coverage of yours truly and earn his team a crucial game-tying touchdown.

Since its inception, flag football has become a staple of many students’ Sunday routine and there are hopes that this is the start of a future Brentwood sports program.
