On April 27th, a Thursday night, the AP psychology class gathered together in McNeill’s to do one final, intense study session before they battled it out with the long-anticipated AP exam.

AP Psychology 12 is a rigorous academic course that introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of various topics. As students investigate normal and abnormal perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and actions through textbook readings, demonstrations, and labs, they learn to employ the scientific methods used by psychologists - as well as work for outstanding outcomes on the exam. Students have the opportunity to expand their understanding of themselves and the people around them. Whether they choose to pursue a career in psychology or in some entirely different field, this course enables students to recognize psychological principles encountered in everyday situations and apply the concepts to explore their own lives.

“I teach psychology because when students come into the class it is not for the faint of heart. Because when I tell them how much information they actually need to retain and understand, a lot of them go ‘I’m out of here’, and a lot of students stay but are worried and stressed. As the year goes by, however, and we make our way through the course, it is really cool to see how students have overcome their initial hesitancy that they don’t think they can do it. And here we are today where my students are so close to finishing the course and should feel so proud and accomplished.” shares Ms Richardson, AP Psychology Teacher.

Ms Richardson was kind enough to provide an array of snacks including fruit, cake, tea, hot chocolate, juice, and coffee. As a class, we spent the entire hour and a half reviewing each of the nine units. We used the cake as a motivating factor during our study and the rule was that every completed section in the review packet was an opportunity for everyone to have a bite of cake.

This strategy for studying is called the incentive theory of motivation, and it is a behavioral theory that suggests people are motivated by a drive for incentives and reinforcements. This means that as a class, our desire for being reinforced and eating more of the delicious cake caused us to focus our attention on the study packet and efficiently go through each concept. “I really enjoyed this study session as it was an amazing motivational factor when cake and snacks were involved. I really hope all of my hard work will pay off in the exam and am confident in my ability to get a 5” comments Lily C, Mack ‘23.

A huge thank you to Ms Richardson for mentoring and teaching us all there is to know about this rigorous course and for organizing such a fun and engaging study session. “Please pray for us AP Psychology students as we challenge the exam and wish for our success!” Miranda N, Alex ‘23 encourages.
