Student vs. Staff/Alumni Hockey

As British Columbia - and Europe - saw an increase in COVID cases over the holidays, and provincial restrictions tightened, our hockey program’s highly anticipated trip to the Czech Republic and Austria was, inevitably, canceled.

This season, the program has faced uncertainty, but those behind the scenes have been working hard to be able to keep us players in shape, and the morale high on and off the ice. Although we would have loved to play overseas, in countries that celebrate the game we all love, the safety of everyone involved is most important.

Postponed to a later date, our annual Showcase game was still a night of two full length inter-squad games at Kerry Park. A third year member of the program, Nick C, Ellis ‘22, enthused: “Playing against teammates is always fun, and super competitive.” We missed the spectators, but being on the ice is what it’s all about for us. We players had the opportunity to play a game for the 4th day in a row, facing Brentwood staff, alumni, and parents.

We met at Shawnigan Lake School for a 4 pm puck drop on Sunday afternoon. The student team felt the effects of four unanswered goals before striking back. The speed of the game was fast, and a couple of checks from our opposition got us riled up, as we scored three goals. The final score read 7-4, with the staff, alumni and parents claiming the win. Recent graduate, and former team captain, Nick P, Rogers ‘21 was “excited to be able to come back and play against some old friends and teammates.”

As the winter term approaches the spring term, for many seniors, this season will be their last playing organized hockey. A highly valued defenseman on the team, Captain, Trekker J, Ellis ‘22 remembers and appreciates the moments he has spent playing for Brentwood: “I am sad to have to let it go soon, but I am grateful for the growth my game has seen with the program and for the memories and friends I have made.” The Ross Cup in February will be the finale for Trekker’s and many others’ youth hockey careers; a high school hockey tournament held in the Cowichan Valley.

To Mr Shadlock, Mr Robinson, Mr Interlandi and all those who have contributed their time and hard work into the program, from all of us players, thank you. The program doesn’t solely provide ice times, workouts, and games, but also strong leaders encouraging hard work, perseverance, discipline and integrity. As many seniors will be moving on come June, Brentwood’s Hockey program has been invaluable in learning the importance of being a reliable team player.
