Strong Results at Monster Erg

7 February 2012

On Sunday the 5th of February, many of the senior rowers had a lunch date. Over the course of the day we were reintroduced one by one to our forgotten companion, an old friend known casually as 'the burn'.

Yes, it was time for Monster Erg once again, the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships held at the University of Victoria. Athletes pull on ergometers for a grueling 2km in a room filled with numerous others suffering a similar fate.

Fortunately, Brentwood stormed the podium in every event entered, with Jan B placing second in the Jr. A division in 6:27 with Joel B a mere 0.9 seconds behind him. Friedrich W placed 4th in 6:31, followed by Lancelot B in 7th in 6:36 and Nicholas Ridenour 11th in 6:41.

In the Jr. A lightweight division, Brett L placed 3rd in 6:52 followed by Jonathan H in 4th with 6:58.

Perhaps the most impressive result of the day was coxswain Rielly M, who truly embodied the spirit of Monster Erg, pulling his way to a 1:55 for the 500m 'coxswains crawl' event and finishing in 2nd place.

The event was followed by a mountainous feast of chili while watching the Super Bowl with the rest of the team back at Coach Carr's place, refueling for a return to training on Monday.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
