In the past few months, after performing at the Canadian Thanksgiving Dinner and travelling down to Victoria for a day of master classes at SMUS, our group of seven strings players have been practising with extra effort to get their pieces ready for the Concert for a Winter’s Eve, which will be taking place next Thursday and Friday. The performance will include arrangements of “Away in a Manger”, “The Christmas Song”, and “Up on the Housetop”. Although the ensemble did not have the opportunity to perform at the Remembrance Day service, Francis V, Ellis ‘18 and Stephanie C, Allard ‘16 serenaded the student and staff audience with a duet of the Theme from “Schindler’s List” by John Williams. As well as focusing on individual techniques and articulations with the stringed instruments, the group has also been introduced to music theory. Through learning about the basics of music, such as the Italian musical terms and how to compose a simple melody, the young Brentwood musicians are able to apply their growing knowledge to create better expressions in different tunes. Coming back from a well-loved and relaxing winter break, the musical groups will be rehearsing new pieces for the upcoming festivals on the Island in the spring.
