Staff vs Student Golf - The John Garvey Cup
On Saturday, June 8th, at the Cowichan Golf Club, the rivalry between staff and students was renewed. 14 brave students ventured forth against the staff, seeking to retain the John Garvey Cup for the 3rd consecutive year. The Cup was contested over 9 holes in a Ryder Cup-style event in which each match was worth a single point.
Having suffered a 6-1 match drubbing at the hands of the students in 2018, the staff were motivated to show that they could still compete. Prior to matches beginning, the mountain of nerves from the students warming up on the range were only matched by the sublime confidence of the staff congregating around the putting green, reminding each other to stretch so as to survive walking 9 holes without suffering any pulled hamstrings.
The staff jumped out to an early lead in a handful of matches and things looked optimistic for the veterans. Optimism for the staff began to fade as the team of Head of School Bud Patel and former golf captain Calvin Chua Privett '18 fell to Gavyn K '22 and Jamie T '20 on hole #8. Shortly thereafter, Sonny A '20 rolled in a 4-foot putt on hole #9 to halve a match that he and his partner Ishan V '21 trailed for much of the round.
When all results were finally tabulated, the results were 3.5 – 3.5. As per Ryder Cup rules, a tie means the trophy remains with whichever team last won it outright. Brentwood Golf Captain Alex Culberson '19 proudly walked across the stage of the Killy Theatre during our Internal Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 13 to accept the John Garvey Cup on behalf of the students of the Brentwood Golf program.
As usual, this annual event would not be possible without the support of Norm Jackson and the entire staff of Cowichan Golf Club. We thank them for their continued partnership in support of Brentwood's student golfers.
