Sr. Boys Basketball Captures Silver at ISA Tournament

6 December 2011

The Senior Boys Basketball team got their season off to a strong start claiming second at the Independent Schools Tournament held at St. George’s in Vancouver this past weekend. The team opened the tournament, and their season, with a 61-47 win over a scrappy West Point Grey Academy. While things were far from pretty, Martin B helped power the boys to victory with his strong performance off the bench.   In the semi-finals, Brentwood came up against a gritty, well coached team from Southridge Secondary. It was a back-and-forth affair and the boys finally went up one in the closing seconds thanks to a David L leaning jumper in the paint. The team managed to hang on for a hard fought 71-70 win.  In the final, the boys were up against a very talented and provincially ranked AAA home team in Saint Georges. The boys clearly welcomed the challenge and came out gunning and held a 5 point lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second, a few defensive breakdowns and trouble on the defensive board allowed St. Georges to gain some momentum and take a 4 point lead into the first half.   St. Georges surged ahead in the third and looked poised to pull away with a 13 point lead heading into the final quarter. The Brentwood boys refused to break, however, and despite some significant challenges on the defensive glass, slowly climbed their way back into the game thanks to some clutch shooting from Jordan C who cut the lead to two with forty seconds remaining. After a St. Georges miss, it looked like Brentwood had come up with the ball and a chance to win the game but instead we were whistled for a foul with just 4 seconds remaining.  The St. Georges player calmly knocked down both free throws to seal their well-earned victory.   Nonetheless, the coaching staff was pleased with the manner in which the boys stepped up to the challenge and refused to back down. It was a good lesson in what it takes to compete with some of the best and the boys are to be congratulated on a fine opening weekend. Mr. Blake Gage, Coach
