Soup for the Soul

Each week, a number of Brentwood students volunteer to make soup for Kowhemun Elementary, a K-7 school located in Duncan. It is led by SPARC reps Anthony S and Felipe P S. It is also well supported by many students within the school as they pitch in by purchasing baked goods also made by SPARC students to raise funds.

At Kowhemun there are some students whose families cannot afford to send them to school with nutritional lunches; approximately 75 of the 270 children are living below the poverty line and can benefit from a little nutritional support. As Brentwood students drop in and help make the soup, they are also being rewarded with the knowledge "that by nourishing these children, they are allowing them to become better learners and more service minded," say teachers at Khowhemun.

We also rely on Thrifty Foods to supply the ingredients to make the soup. This year, however, we are becoming more self-sufficient by organizing fund raisers to pay for the food and using the vegetables from Brentwood’s BEAT garden. The dining hall staff have also given a helping hand by supplying the pots, cutting boards and soup stock.

After all has been cooked, the volunteers bring the soup to Crooks Hall to be picked up and delivered by a Thrifty Foods van. “The soup man is here!” cry the children as they see the truck pull up at the school during lunch hour; it is clear that a difference is really being made with the beaming smiles and laughter seen and heard among the children.

By making time to volunteer in their free fine-art blocks, the students of Brentwood have put smiles on the faces of the students of Kowhemun Elementary by putting food in their stomachs.
