Somenos Marsh Madness

20 March 2022

On Friday, March 4th, the sun was shining and the grins from both Brentwood students and Mill Bay Nature school kids were from ear to ear. Mr McCarthy took his AP Environmental Science class to the Semonas Marsh to learn about the various species living in that area - and how to enjoy the company of rambunctious pre-teens.

Each Brentwood student was paired with a kiddo from Mill Bay Nature School; the duos ran around the marsh learning about the organisms in it while having fun getting to know one another. “Everyone learned something new about the creatures living so close to us” says Ainsley D, Alex ‘22. Was she refering to the elmentary school students or the local fauna?

The kindergarten students were over the moon when they heard they had the opportunity to help the senior students with their strenuous homework assignment of writing a list of all the animals and plants they saw. The feeling of contributing to the homework of the people they looked up to was like opening a pack of gummies and seeing them all red - the best flavour.

When my buddy, Aurora, and I returned to the bus and got settled in our seats, she reminded me that “We saw a unicorn too, Grace. Write that down.”

During the hour-long trek around the marsh, students from both schools took full advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the abiotic and biotic factors that are detrimental to the success of the Somenos ecosystem.

“My buddy was very smart and he reminded me of the animals we spotted” stated Justine C, Alex ‘22.

The snacks provided to the students by the Food Services Staff in Crooks Hall were the thing that prevented the possible meltdowns when the kids heard Mr McCarthy announce the dreadful information that there is only “10 minutes left!”

All jokes aside, thank you to Mr McCarthy and the staff and teachers from Mill Bay Nature School for their outstanding patience in organizing this field trip. On behalf of the AP Environmental Science class I can attest that we are looking forward to the next event with the kinders and can’t wait to learn more about the fascinating world we call home.
