Soaring Soccer Spirits

13 April 2022

After two years of a complete lack of competitive soccer games, our girls’ soccer team was full of emotion and pride at the 10:30 am kick-off at our first tournament game on Thursday, April 7th. From the time we met in the change room pre-game, until the whistle blew at the end of the 90 minute game, the girls were positive, encouraging, and wonderful sports to our competitors.

The school bus was full with 19 players, six of them being juniors.

Although the game didn’t end with the outcome we were hoping for, every player took risks on the pitch and never gave up, which is what matters for our improvement as the season progresses.

Our squad fell short of Stelly’s by only one goal, thanks to our phenomenal goalkeeper, Brooke R, Mack ‘23. The final score of the well-fought game was 1-0 for our opponents, Stelly’s Secondary School.

Head Coach, Mr Barrett, provides some insight: “This past weekend we had our first exhibition games with the 36 girls in the program playing over the span of two days. This was a fantastic way to prepare for the tournament at the University of Victoria. On the Vike’s pitch, it was great to see the growth and progress as well as the coaching staff watching the players applying the references that they hear in training and using them in a full field game.”

With tons of passes executed, shots on net, give and goes, breaking lines, and even some scrapes and bruises, it is fair to say that the girl’s soccer team had a successful first day of the tournament.

One of our talented seniors, Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 says “It was a great opportunity for our team to learn how to play with each other and build on our team skill set.”

A special thanks goes to our coaching staff who travelled to Victoria with us: Mr Barrett, Ms Fougner, Griffin FR, and our apprentice athletic therapist, Kwyn. With more than our fair share of players with long lasting injuries, Kwyn deserves a special thank you for how many nasty smelling feet she had to tape - way too many odourous ankles.

“I had an amazing experience playing with the seniors. They are so supportive and have excellent skills. I’m looking forward to a great season and I can’t wait to play more with this group of girls” enthused Isha CS, Mack ‘24.

Stay tuned for the date of our next home game and please come support the girls on the pitch!
