Silver to Gold: First XV are BC Champs!

This past Saturday brought a close to the Boy's First XV season in stunning fashion as the team became BC Provincial Champions after four grueling days of competition. The boys were focused and ready to turn last year’s silver medal performance into gold by sending a bold statement to their competitors after defeating Esquimalt 81-0 and Southridge 49-5 in the early rounds.

Contributions from the full 24 man squad were apparent in these rounds as Ted S, Gavin S, and Jake B injected much needed energy into the team with solid performances off the bench. Next up came a far tougher task in the #3 ranked Rockridge side which Brentwood narrowly defeated by only one point in last year’s meeting in the semi-finals.
This year, however, proved to be a more one-sided affair as several younger members of the team including Loet H, Austin G and Dan E asserted their dominance both defensively and offensively in the wet conditions, sparking a 37-3 win. Notable play also came from basketball convert Jon C who showed his pace on numerous runs. The next day the team had a much deserved rest which included hydrotherapy, many card games and, of course, the dreaded ice baths.
As Saturday approached, the boys prepared to seek revenge against the #1 ranked and defending champion Collingwood side in front of a crowd packed full of Brentwood staff, students and alumni. The atmosphere was magical and, despite a nervous start, the boys took a 7-0 lead thanks to Davin K capping off a perfect maul whilst also playing a man down. The game remained tense until center Mike M burst through for a beastly 80 meter run, then wing Toby D dove over the line to jump to a 14-0 lead. The latter moments of the game, however, proved to be shaky as the opposition clawed themselves back to a 14-7 scoreline as the final whistle drew the game to a close.
For some players, this will mark the end of their rugby careers and for others it is a stepping stone to higher levels, but winning this championship shall remain an amazing memory for all involved.
A huge thanks to coaches Mr. Flynn, Mr. Medina and Mr. Healy for their effort and commitment with the team this season. The nucleus of this team, including Lifers like Mike G, Scott P and Ian M, who have served the Brentwood rugby program through thick and thin for 5 years, know how far the Brentwood coaching staff has brought them since their days as the Mighty Mice in the fall of 2007.
With a large contingent of Grade 11s on the squad this year and an enthusiastic group of Grade 10s, we believe that the future of the Brentwood Rugby program is in good hands.
