Silence!

19 November 2010
For the 26 hour period between the end of assembly on Thursday and the end of classes on Friday, approximately 100 otherwise enthusiastically verbal Brentwood students began a self-imposed period of silence: no talking, texting, tweeting, Facebooking or emailing. What could motivate our teenagers to shun these generally spontaneous means of communication?

Solidarity with children around the world whose voices are not heard.

To mark the 21st anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and to imagine what it is like to be a child whose voice is not heard, many on our campus have fallen silent. Millions of children around the world are denied the opportunity to attend school, forced to work as child labourers, and grow up in dire poverty. Our school’s act of empathy, we hope, will lead to greater sensitivity to this crisis, and will catalyze efforts to ensure the rights of all children.
