Last Saturday a huge milestone passed for the Brentwood Varsity hockey team. The team’s Showcase game vs Saint George’s was an absolute shootout with a total of 17 goals being scored. The team also started a new Showcase tradition by holding a “Brentwood Whiteout”. The crowd of nearly 400 students, dressed in white, was absolutely electric and cheered on the team until the very last buzzer. The first period was a hard-fought battle: goals were traded back and forth as Kirtis H, Privett, 19 and rookie skater Daniel W, Ellis, 19 each had a tally in the period. Brentwood stayed true to their relentless nature and recorded 10 shots on goal while playing a sound systematic game. The team headed into the second period with a 2-2 tie. During the first intermission, the SAC held a shooting competition. Of all the people who entered raffle tickets, the two selected were Zach L, Ellis ‘19 and Hala M, Hope ‘19. The winner took home some great prizes and the crowd loved the event.  The second period of play was a tough one for Brentwood. Saint George’s quickly ran up the score on several odd-man rushes. However, Brentwood was able to tally two more goals: Kirtis and Hadi N, Ellis ‘19 both helped keep Brentwood in the game, and gave a spur of hope going into the third.  The second intermission brought the coveted “Showcase Hockey Duck Toss” as hundreds of students threw ducks, aiming for the target at center ice. Brentwood’s duck toss has continued to be a staple event and we look forward to handing the prizes out to the winner.  As the third period began, Brentwood immediately had to go to work. They would start the period shorthanded and a Saints defenceman joined a late rush and was able to score adding to the hole Brentwood had to get out of. Brentwood’s offense, however, was sparked as Kirtis H scored his hat-trick goal and Haden U, Ellis ‘19 was able to get a late goal that brought on an onslaught of offense in the final five minutes.  Although the team did not get the result they wanted, the boys and girls battled back to make it an 11-6 game. Many lessons were quickly learned during the game and the team has swiftly moved on.  Kirtis, the game MVP, was awarded the MVP sombrero after a big-time performance. He notched his first hat-trick of the season and helped keep the Brentwood offense inspired on the bench. I spoke with him after the game and he said “It was a great way to play my last Showcase game and the support from the fans was amazing.”  Athletics Prefect, Jacob B, Ellis ‘19 also commented to me on the crowd of the game and said “The crowd was spectacular, from the white-out to the intermission events, they never stopped cheering. It was one of the best atmospheres we’ve had all year and I’m proud of the way the students showed up.” We would like to thank Saint George’s for coming out and carrying on this tradition, as well as the fans who came out and made the night so special. The boys are already hard at work as they get ready for a back-to-back series with Frances Kelsey next week.  Haden U, Ellis ‘19
