Senior Soccer’s Success

The last match for the Senior Boys Soccer squad featured a 1st XI + 2nd XI mix against the Capernwray Bible College from Thetis Island. Some concern was expressed by our players about the age of the opposition, who were mainly college students. One of our players did say “I’ve never played against a boy with a bald patch before!” The Capernwray side, as we could tell from the many UK accents, had some very good, experienced players and they hit us hard with two quick goals inside 5 minutes. A third followed, but we responded with Nick W scoring from a scramble following a corner. Then, some good approach work down the wing saw Toby dribble past two defenders before side-footing the ball past the keeper. The score was 2-3 at the half in favour of Capernwray. Our edge in fitness began to tell in the second half and, with Tao making some miraculous saves in goal and some stalwart defending by the back four, we managed to limit them to some long-range shots. Late in the half, we began to open up their defense with some strong football along the flanks. Goals came from Toby C, Keaton S, and a strange one from Jaco VR. After a long penetrating run by Keaton, he evaded the diving clutches of the full-back and the goalkeeper and chipped it home. Or so it seemed. Philip came rushing in and tried to deliver the exclamation mark to an excellent move. Unfortunately, his shot from 1 metre out, in front of an open net, rang off the crossbar. Amidst the disbelief and the chaos that followed, Jaco slotted home from 20 m out. Score 5-3 Brentwood. Capernwray came storming back and got one goal to narrow the score to 5-4, but Toby notched his third of game to give him four hat-tricks this season. So, we finished the season with a heart-warming win 6-4. We now await the exploits of our girls soccer teams in the spring. Mr. John Garvey, Coach
